Anyone who has ever baked pretzels or lye pastries themselves will be familiar with baking soda (Kaiser Natron) as a leavening agent. It's also used in Christmas baking, for example, for Aachener Printen or Spekulatius, to loosen the dough – the manufacturer Holste's website offers a small digital recipe booklet. Caution: Baking soda and baking powder are two different things – so please don't use baking powder as a substitute for your dog, because then the acid that is in Kaiser Natron will be missing. Many people have probably never used baking soda and don't realize that baking soda, for example, can relieve heartburn in dogs. Yet sodium bicarbonate (that's the full name for baking soda) was quite a miracle cure in Grandma's time:
- Added to laundry detergent, it helped to soften the water, remove stains, and acted as a fabric softener.
- Before Febreze & Co. existed, sprinkled baking soda ensured that bad odors disappeared from upholstery (as a dog owner, you're probably familiar with this when your dog has rolled in something that doesn't smell pleasant).
- Dissolved in coffee or tea prepared with hard water, Kaiser Natron improves the taste.
- Together with vinegar, it acts as a natural drain cleaner.
As you can see, the applications are diverse. This has been known for more than 100 years, but it has almost been forgotten today. Yet this home remedy is not only good for your dog's heartburn but is still a good alternative or supplement to various chemical agents today. And the best part: 250 grams of baking soda can be bought in drugstores for just a few euros.
Kaiser Natron can help your dog in many cases, such as heartburn and other illnesses
Fortunately, the effect of sodium bicarbonate is now well-known again. Some veterinarians are also now using Kaiser Natron again for various indications. It has proven effective in various cases.
In these cases, baking soda can help your dog:
- You can use baking soda for skin inflammations that are of allergic origin or caused by bacteria, fungal infections, or parasites.
- Eczema, also known as hot spots, can heal faster with regular washing of your dog with baking soda.
- Dogs that frequently suffer from diarrhea or stomach and intestinal problems can often be helped by taking Kaiser Natron: it can reduce heartburn in dogs.
- As a supplement to arthritis medication, baking soda can help dogs suffering from joint inflammation, arthritis, and arthrosis to have fewer symptoms.
- In cases of pancreatitis, Kaiser Natron can act as support for therapy with medication.
- For problems in the oral cavity and with teeth, baking soda can help maintain their health.
- For skin or coat odor, washing with Kaiser Natron can help eliminate unpleasant odors.
- For psychosomatic disorders and epilepsy in dogs, sodium bicarbonate can reduce the frequency of seizures.
- For severe bad breath in your dog, a little Kaiser Natron dissolved in water can help minimize it through disinfection. But be careful: severe bad breath in a domestic dog can also have other causes: low-quality food, incorrect or insufficient dental care, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
As always: consult your veterinarian beforehand and do not administer baking soda without their consent.

You can find recommendations for dosages of sodium bicarbonate for various dog problems on various online sites. Among others, at the Veterinary Institute for Applied Small Animal Medicine in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, whose director, however, is not undisputed. As stated: ask your veterinarian, especially when it comes to taking baking soda. Your veterinarian knows your dog and knows what is appropriate or even an option for exactly this magnificent example of a dog.
You need to know this much if you want to consult your veterinarian about trying Kaiser Natron: basically, you create a saturated baking soda solution from baking soda and water, which can ensure that the respective environment changes positively and germs, fungi, pathogens, parasites, and more are curbed in their development. Heartburn in your dog can also be curbed with baking soda in this way.
Our experiences with Kaiser Natron with our SABRO dogs
When it comes to purely external application, we have had good experiences with Kaiser Natron with our SABRO dogs:
To curb skin or coat odor, you can add one to two teaspoons of baking soda to a liter of water and wash your dog with it. It also helps to sprinkle dry baking soda and then brush it off with a dog brush.
For skin conditions, we dissolve a pinch of Kaiser Natron in about 150 ml of warm water and moisten the wound area with it by soaking a cotton ball and carefully dabbing the affected areas.
Have you also had experiences with Kaiser Natron with your dog? Then we look forward to your comment.
